1. THE LANGUAGES BOX - MARKETING MATERIALS FOR LANGUAGES

Languages Boxes containing marketing materials for languages have now
been sent to all institutions who have confirmed the name and address of the
most appropriate recipient. We will be contacting the recipients shortly to
discuss ways of promoting links with their local schools. Please contact Sue
Nash at the Subject Centre ([log in to unmask]) if you wish to know who has
been sent the box in your institution. Additional Languages Boxes can be
ordered from the Subject Centre at a cost of £50 including postage and
packing. Please place your orders with Sue Nash.

2. MATERIALS BANK PROJECT - CALL FOR DONATIONS

It is not too late to contribute to this major Subject Centre Project which is
gathering and disseminating in-house materials for the teaching of languages,
linguistics and area studies. We are looking for samples of materials that can
be shared across the sector in the form of word files, websites, call programs

3. THE TRAINING OF TEACHERS OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE:
DEVELOPMENTS IN EUROPE

This study examines the initial training and in-service training of teachers of a
foreign language in Europe. It summarises developments over recent years,
presents a number of case studies of good practice, and makes
recommendations on how good practice and innovation can be spread more
widely across Europe. A summary of the report and recommendations can
be found in the Executive Summary (=clickable link).  The introduction
explains the context and remit of the study. The report examines initial
teacher training in primary and secondary schools and provision for in-service
training across thirty-two countries. It identifies a number of academic needs
that have emerged from the analysis, and presents fifteen case studies,
showing a range of good practice and innovation. It then offers a professional
profile of the ideal European teacher and makes recommendations on how
language teacher training can be further strengthened by actions at European
level.

The appendices to the main report contain detailed information on the fifteen
case studies, a national report on language teacher training in each of the
thirty-two countries studied, and the methodology adopted for the study.

The report was prepared for the European Commission, Directorate General
for Education and Culture, and was produced by a small research team at
the University of Southampton, led by Professor Michael Kelly and Dr.
Michael Grenfell. It was completed in June 2002. The website address is:

5. CONFERENCE AT ASTON UNIVERSITY: TEACHING EUROPEAN
LANGUAGES IN A MULTILINGUAL CONTEXT

A day conference for teachers, language advisers, careers advisers and
employers to be held at Aston University, Birmingham B4 7ET on Tuesday,
24th September 2002. The day will also include an introduction to Aston's

6. 2nd EYL SYMPOSIUM, 26 September 2002, UNIVERSITY OF
SOUTHAMPTON

2nd Southampton Symposium to celebrate the European Day of Languages
COMPETING FOR SPACE: Can immigrant and indigenous linguistic
minorities coexist? 26 September 2002 University of Southampton After the
highly successful first symposium, The End of Babel?, held last year,
Southampton University's School of Modern Languages and the Subject
Centre for Language, Linguistics and Area Studies will once again be hosting
a day symposium on a current topical language issue. We have been very
fortunate in securing four excellent and well-known speakers to deliver the
key papers. Prof. Peter Nelde (Catholic University, Brussels) Dr. Miquel
Strubell (universitat Oberta, Barcelona, and formerly of the Language Policy
Directorate of the Generalitat) Prof. Colin Williams (Cardiff University) Euan

7. SUBJECT CENTRE OPEN DAY, Friday 27th September 02

The Subject Centre will be launching its new online Resources Area which
includes the Materials Bank of shared teaching materials and the Web Guide
to Good Practice which comprises commissioned articles, case studies and
reports covering learning and teaching in languages, linguistics and area
studies. The day will also include sessions on the European Language
Portfolio, using Virtual Learning Environments and the Subject Centre's
recently launched Languages Box of resources for marketing languages. The
event is free of charge and refreshments will be provided. To register please

New software database
Our database of CALL software has been completely redesigned and
reprogrammed and the content is gradually being brought completely up
to date.  Both the new and old databases can be found at
