Words are a serious business, don't try to drink patrol or eat rat poison.
My problem with the term "people of colour/color" is I am coloured, we all are. Just ask any good artist. The term "black" is a political statement, is the "of colour/color" a different statement? the terms
"disabled people" and "people with disabilities" are likewise.
It is more urgent that we remove disability from society before civilisation can progress. In order to do that we need to have agreed definitions to enhance our communications between each other. We need terms that define the discrimination we collectively face, that we all understand. How else can we remove it?
The injury of discrimination is in fact it is an injury to all of us. It holds humanity back.
I am well known (to some UK people) as at first supporting the phrase "people with disabilities", until I learned the historical context of the word.
The term "with" creates a disassociation of the reality of systematic world wide discrimination. The use of "with" is quite appropriate when used in conjunction with referring to a person's impairment i.e. a person with a leg impairment is far more than just being a "leg impairment", we are dealing with a real human being, however to a doctor a "leg impairment" is on a job list. A job list is just represents a problem that needs fixing. A Loss of humanity if allow ourselves to be controlled by that model.
Well that's my Euros worth for now
