There is a degree of oppression for all minorities but to claim that
"I do think this 'we are people first/ argument is wrong. The whole point is
we are not allowed to be people ever. Society has disabled me and refused to
let me and my impairment exist freely".
Seems a little absurd to me. I have lived in both countries (now in the UK)
and have always felt that I am a person first and have not wanted to define
myself by my disability. To me my disability is a significant handicap at
times but thats all it is. The thought police in the UK are significantly
more disabling when they try and force me to define myself by their narrow
sense of victimhood, so I let them train themselves in whatever they deem
appropriate for themselves and get on with my life regardless.
Spending valuable time on this issue simply reminds me that the ideologues
cannot be swayed and I for one am excluded from a sub-culture to which I
should by right belong simply because of how I prefer to see myself.
Whatever happened to embracing diversity?
