Hi there, I sent a message, but I think that it went to the individual
rather than to the list (oops-my apologies to the recipient!) In any case,
my point was that the linguistic differences might be reflective more of
geography, rather than political orientation. I am very much a social model
proponent. I insist in all my writing that I am a person with a dis/ability.
I use the backslash as a gramatical indicator that the dis/ability itself is
not dis/abling, but rather a function of the society in which I live.
Further, the dis/ability is some, but not all, of who I am. It is real,
based in my experience, but should not be used as a category by which to
oppress me. Here in Canada, many of us with dis/abilities have fought to
have the language changed from "disabled" to "with a dis/ability." It
appears that in the U.K., it is the reverse. Rather than argue about which
version is the more "correct", it might be wiser to simply acknowledge that
social and geographic locations have both political and linguistic
implications. Lilith
