As Chairperson of the Health Reform Committee of the Council of Canadians
with Disabilities (CCD), I presented a few months ago to the Commission on
the Future of Health Care in Canada. CCD's full submission to that
Commission provides an excellent overview of
health-related issues of persons who have disabilities and can be accessed
at www.pcs.mb.ca

As to a priority issue for consideration by health professionals, a good
start would probably be their own education on disability and the realities
of living with same. Unless health professionals recognize that persons with
disabilities are fundamentally just like anyone else, our health
needs/rights will never be given the same recognition and attention.

A few years ago, the organization for which I work developed a one-day
workshop with accompanying video for incorporation into the School of
Medicine curriculum at Memorial University of Newfoundland. The workshop has
since been used to educate any variety of professionals (i.e. social
workers, educators, other health professionals) on disability and disability
issues. All workshop facilitators and presenters are persons with
disabilities of various kinds.
