I have just returned from a ten day trip to the mainland so I am ten
days late in writing. However I must make two comments about "disabled
people" and "person with a disability."
First, I do not follow the social model so I should not use and do not
use "disabled people." I use the discrimination or legal model. For more
information on it and the social model and seven other variances of the
disability paradigm please see my article "The Conceptualization of
Disability" published in Exploring Theories and Expanding Methodologies:
Where We Are and Where We Need to Go edited by Sharon N. Barnartt and
Barbara Mandell Altman in the series Research in Social Science and
Disability, New York: Elsevier Science, volume 2 (2001), pages 29-52.
Second, when I use the term "person with a disability" I do it as an
"in your face" comment. Otherwise, I am just a plain ol' person.
This discussion is good and by making us all think about terminology
DOES benefit people with disabilities in a more profound way than many
other things.
