Accessing Identity Seminar
Identity and urban regeneration
Hosted by the Department of Geography, University of Hull
25th September 2002 9.30am - 5.45pm
at 'The Deep' Business Centre, Hull
The seminar
'Identity and urban regeneration' aims to foster dialogue between
academics and practitioners working in this broad area. The seminar will
focus on the practical dilemmas facing those in public, private and
third sector organizations who deal with issues such as place, class,
gender and ethnic identities on an everyday basis. It will therefore be
of interest to those involved with the practice and theory of both
social and economic regeneration in Britain's towns and cities.
Seminar themes:
- Place image and identity
- Social exclusion and urban regeneration
- Partnership approaches to urban regeneration
- Sustainable development
- Community involvement in regeneration projects
The seminar will comprise a number of key note presentations during the
day by both academics and practitioners, and will end with a panel
discussion which aims to bring together and explore the issues that have
been raised during the presentations. It is envisaged that a significant
amount of time will be given over to interaction, participation and
discussion, particularly during the latter part of the day. Speakers
include:
Monica Degan (Open University)
Tim Hall (University of Gloucestershire)
Aidan Kirby (Wollf Olins)
John Till (hull cityvision)
Alison Stenning (University of Birmingham
The cost of the seminar is #15 (which includes tea, coffee and buffet
lunch).
There are a limited number of travel bursaries available to postgraduate
students.

The Seminar Series
Identity and urban regeneration is the second in a series of 6 seminars
in a new ESRC funded Seminar Programme entitled Accessing Identity, to
be held over the next two years (future titles include National Identity
and Heritage; Performance and tourism; Ecology and Gender,
Memorialisation and Diasporic Identities). The programme aims to create
and foster dialogue on issues of identity and difference between a range
of interested groups, such as academics, postgraduate students and
research fellows, management practitioners and employees in the public
and private sectors, government agencies, charities and not-for-profit
organisations, politicians and political parties. Placing a focus on
empirical study rather than abstract theorisation of identities and
differences, the seminar programme aims to share and discuss such
academic work across the many disciplines which have an intellectual
interest in such issues and to move forward its practical potential with
an audience of prospective users. As such the seminar series offers and
new and challenging approach to discussion on questions of identity
