1. ALT-C 2002 latest news
The following press release will be sent out tomorrow:
LORD PUTTNAM TO SPEAK ON TECHNOLOGY FOR THE
FUTURE OF EDUCATION
Lord David Puttnam will address delegates on the theme of
technology and the future of education at the close of the ninth
international conference of the Association for Learning Technology
in Sunderland in September. Known for his outstanding work in film
and now in education, Lord Puttnam is Chancellor of the University
of Sunderland, which will host ALT-C 2002 at its high-tech, award-
winning St Peter's Campus.
Other keynote speakers, both internationally recognised for their
work in teaching and learning, will address the conference on
Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 September. Dr Diana Oblinger,
University of North Carolina, USA, has published widely in the field.
She is the co-author of What Business Wants from Higher
Education, which received the 1999 Frandson Award for best
literature in continuing education. Prof Martin Valcke, University of
Ghent, Belgium, is known for his research into new approaches in
education using information and communication technologies. He
has worked on many national and international research and
consultancy projects in South Africa and in South and Central
America. Prof Valcke regularly contributes to activities and projects
of the World Bank, the European Commission and other
international organisations.
The conference theme, Learning Technologies for Communication,
will be explored in presentations of papers, hands-on workshops,
demonstrations, posters and panel discussions. ALT-C 2002 also
features a research strand for the first time this year. The
presentation of the eTutor of the Year Award, sponsored by LTSN
and the THES, will be made on Tuesday 9 September.
Professor Suzanne Robertson, Chair of ALT-C 2002, said: "The
conference theme has struck a chord with many people working in
higher further and education. One of the greatest benefits of the
new learning technologies is their ability to enhance communication
between teachers and learners, making their experience much
more fulfilling".
Rhonda Riachi, Director of ALT, said: "ALT-C has a unique
atmosphere that will benefit from the modern riverside setting of the
Sunderland St Peter's Campus. Its campus accommodation is
rated amongst the best in the country and is served by the historic
setting of the Bonded Warehouse bistro and bar. We are looking
forward to another inspiring and sociable conference, with plenty of
opportunities for delegates to try out the technologies on show in
the exhibition and meet like-minded people."
ALT-C 2002 is sponsored by the LTSN, FDLearning and WebCT.

New Report: Learning Environments Support in the UK Further and
Higher Education Communities
The JISC plans to fund a National JISC Centre of Expertise in the
Planning and Implementation of Information Systems. A report,
'Learning Environments Support in the UK Further and Higher
Education Communities' by Frances Condron and Stuart
Sutherland, has contributed usefully to the planning of the service
(the proposed outline of the service is described in JISC Circular
05-02: http://www.jisc.ac.uk/pub02/c05_02.html).
This report may be of general interest to colleges and universities
as it provides an overview of current provision of support for
learning environments in the UK.
The report is available for download in PDF and Word formats from
the JISC MLE web site at

5.1 Evaluating Computer-Based Learning Material
Tuesday 13 August 2002
LTSN Engineering, Loughborough University
This workshop is specifically aimed at Teaching and Learning
Technology Officers interested in evaluating the use of computer-
based learning materials and will provide participants with a full
introduction to the evaluation methodology, developed by the
EASEIT-Eng TLTP3 project, from a very practical point of view. It
will introduce participants to the reasons for evaluating, the
rationale behind the development of the standardised methodology
and will include reflections drawn from the experience of using the
methodology for almost 70 evaluations in the last four years.
Whilst the process was initially developed for evaluating computer-
based learning materials used in engineering it is applicable to all
subjects and disciplines, as well as other types of learning
resource.
For further details please see:
http://www.ltsneng.ac.uk/nef/events/evaluation_training_day.asp
This is a free event (delegates are expected to meet their own
travel expenses) however it is necessary to book in advance using
the online booking form:

basis.
