Using XML for Educational Content Management

A one-day workshop from ALT

OVERVIEW The use of XML is becoming widespread in education.
It enables learning materials to be described in common formats
and therefore reusable across different content management
systems. This workshop considers the use of XML in the context of
educational content management and demonstrates how it can be
used for creating and searching reusable course content. Broader
issues such as learning technology standards and authoring tools
will be discussed. The workshop also includes practical sessions
on authoring and packaging content with existing XML-based tools.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED
*  What is XML and why it is used for content management
*  Introduction to XML-based Standards and Specifications
*  XML Authoring Tools
*  How to use GUI editors to create and aggregate reusable course
packages associated with meta-data *  How to create reusable
assessment content using XML and XSL

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
By the end of the workshop participants will have
*  an understanding of the concepts behind the use of XML in an
educational content management system
*  an awareness of the developments of XML-based standards and
specifications
*  used XML authoring tools
*  used XML to describe reusable content associated with meta-
data

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop is aimed at anyone interested in XML and content
management. No previous knowledge or experience of XML is
required, although there will be practical sessions requiring a
moderate degree of ICT proficiency.

create and aggregate course content

1445 Practical session: authoring and rendering assessment

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Boon Low is a Learning Technologist at the University of
Strathclyde specialising in XML/IMS Specifications and tool
developments.

Gerry Graham is an eLearning Consultant at Learning and Teaching
Scotland specialising in educational content development and
interoperability in an IMS context.

All participants will receive a delegate CD.
