We have manged to provide 24 hr cover with 3 SHOIIIs, 1 staff grade and 1
SpR which has just been ratified as a band "a complient rota. We think we
need 6 as a minimum and we are working on this.
The middle graders are backed up by consultants from home called under
strict call "rules" so they dont interpret when the boss is to be called -
this also actually removes the stress from phoning the boss as they know we
will only shout at them for not phoning for something in the list. Also the
rule says we have to be phoned and we do not always have to go in (thank
god!).
We are not convinced the idea of an "attending" system would work as well as
what Scottish departments currently do. Also for it to work the consultant
has to "attend" - if this doesnt happen the whole thing falls apart.

ps where are all the other Scottish A&E people - I am not making this up!
