Trying to run 24 hour cover really needs 7 doctors. If you allow for
EWTD rules, time for supervised training, annual leave and study leave.
Do it on less and you will just make an unattractive job. Somebody may
do it......but the quality will choose the quality jobs. In addition,
there is no point having "middle grade" cover, if they haven't got the
required skills.
There is a definite lack of middle grade applicants, there are a couple
of DGH in South Yorkshire which have had difficulties fulfilling their
current compliment. That is before they try to recruit people to fulfill
their desires of more middle grade cover.

Subject: Re: 24 Hour 'Senior' Cover
How many middle-grade doctors does it require to provide a genuine 24
hour on-site service, though? We have four, and
it may just be possible - if we hardly ever see them during daylight
hours. Thing is, few doctors want to work just night
shifts for years, and it does have training repercussions.
Best wishes,
