I was one of the first consultants to provide a 24 hour cover in the UK. It
was under resourced. We ran it with 4 consultants and 2 anaesthetists which
was insufficient. On my part there was a lot of resentment as one of my
colleagues in my opinion did not participate in the rota. Off out of the
country. On the phone this morning to colleague in New Zealand and over there
they have 10 consultants to run the rota.
I think depts like ours will close at night. I'm single handed and I can't be
responsible for 24 hour cover all the time.
