Another issue on hours of work: GPs have just voted for a contract that
allows them to pull out of cover outside 8 am to 6 p.m. weekdays. I note
that a hospital near me considered getting GPs to cover its A and E
department at night (the department had lost approval for SHO posts) by
offering a substantial rate (possible around £100 an hour) with poor
acceptance from GPs. Makes you wonder who'll be doing out of hours primary
care- difficult to justify new SHOs to cover it, and if consultants are
cheaper than GPs (and even at top threshold with maximum discretionary
points it's still about £75 an hour at nights) we may have to reconsider the
sort of work we do.
