The Centre for Housing Policy at the University of York has been made a
Doctoral Award under the ESRC/ODPM scheme.
The award is for 3 years (fees + ESRC grant) and is for a project
examining the dynamics of local housing markets. It will be supervised by
Roger
Burrows in association with someone from the ODPM. The person appointed
will be based in CHP which is part of the RAE 5 rated Department of Social
Policy and Social Work at York.
>
The details of the project will be worked out with the successful
candidate but it is envisaged that 2 different local housing markets
(York and Middlesbrough) will be studied. Available statistical data will be
gathered and analysed but the main focus of the work will be on using
qualitative methodologies in order to build up a composite picture of
the perspectives that key actors have on the operations of local markets.
>
Qualitative interviews and data gathering based on qualitative work with
maps will form the main data collection for the work. Key actors are
likely to include: estate agents; developers; valuers; landlords;
housing/neighbourhood managers; housing advice workers;
homelessness workers; rent officers; enviromental health officers; and so
on.
The outputs will be substantive but it is also hoped that the work will be
able to
make a contribution to methodological developments in the analysis of local
housing markets.
CHP is interested in attracting a social scientist interested in
beginning a research career. Details of CHP can be found at
www.york.ac.uk/chp.
It is a '+3' award which means that candidates must already have an ESRC
recognised research training in one or other of: sociology; human
geography; social policy; economics; planning; statistics, research methods
etc.
