responsibility for managing projects. It will identify the issues and
problems which may arise in developing and conducting a research
project, including relationships with sponsors and funders, planning and
resource management, negotiating access, report writing and

Introduction to Focus Groups

This course is an introduction to the methods involved in organising and
conducting focus groups and in managing and interpreting the data they
generate. It covers planning, developing questions, moderating,
analysing and reporting focus group results. The course also provides
the opportunity for participants to experience being a member of a focus
group. This course is designed for those people who have little or no
experience of running focus groups.
Writing Successful Research Proposals

This course focuses on what is needed in order to turn a good research
idea into a successful research proposal. It is mainly concerned with
'responsive' mode proposals to Research Councils, Foundations and the
European Union, although some of the points apply as much to bidding for
research against a specification. Topics include deciding where to
apply for funds, writing a case for support, and working out the
administrative and financial details.
Qualitative Interviewing

This course is an introduction to the methods and problems associated
with qualitative interviewing. It is designed for researchers with
little or no experience of this approach and explores the basic
components of 'getting started', conducting interviews and preparing for
analysis. The course also reflects on the importance of the processes
involved in the collection of this type of qualitative data.

This course introduces SPSS for Windows and its use for data
management. Participants are shown, through practical exercises, how to
create an SPSS data file for simple analysis, how to read a raw data
file, how to recode variables and how to create new variables.

This course introduces a rigorous approach to the review of past
research. Such reviews may be done as groundwork for further primary
research, as an expression of the current state of knowledge in a field,
or as a synthesis of research findings commissioned to inform policy or
practice. The course presents methodologies for an objective approach to
defining the scope of a review, identifying relevant research,
appraising its quality, synthesising and communicating research results.
These courses are held at the University of Surrey, Continuing Education Centre, Senate House, Guildford, Surrey GU2 7XH
Cost: £120 per person per course; £100 per person per course for participants from educational institutions and registered charities; £20 - full-time PhD student - Standby rate is only available should the course NOT be fully booked with reduced/standard rate participants.
