John,
A 'spatial turn' in urban history is evident from:
Simon Gunn and Robert J. Morris (2001, eds.) Identities in Space:
Contested Terrains in the Western City since 1850 (Ashgate: Aldershot).
Simon Gunn's brief introduction provides an overview of the 'spatial
turn' in urban/social history tracing this shift to developments in
cultural geography as well as a more general interest in Foucault and
Lefebvre.
