From the break up of Antarctic ice to hurricanes and floods, extreme weather
has taken on a dark new significance!
Many suggest these are no longer just natural phenomena but are encourgaed
by the impact of modern living - from car use and plane travel to the
increased energy demands of developing countries - and are a sign of more
things to come. Politicians and the media rarely miss the opportunity that
hurricanes or extensive flooding provide to warn us of the potential dangers
of global warming. This is nature's 'wake-up call' we are told and we must
change our lifestyles!
But what is the reality behind the rhetoric?
This evening discussion brings together scientific experts and social
commentators to debate whether we are really seeing 'nature's revenge':
Mike Hulme (Executive Director, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research)
Julian Morris (Director of International Policy Network)
Peter Sammonds (Professor of Geophysics, University College London)
Charles Secrett (Executive Director, Friends of the Earth)
The debate marks the launch of Natures Revenge? Hurricanes, Floods and
Climate
Change, a book in the IoI's Debating Matters series
(http://www.instituteofideas.com/Publications/DM/index.html), published by
Hodder & Stoughton.
