[forwarded for Terry Krier, [log in to unmask]]
Dear folks,
I've received an inquiry from a non-Spenserian in Britain,
who owns an 18th-century copy of *The Faerie Queene* I-III. I'll
quote what she's given me of description:
"The first page says 'The Fairy Queen written by Edmund Spenser with
a Glossary, Explaining the old and obfcure Words. In two volumes.
Volume the First. London Printed for J.and R.Tonson in the Strand
MDCC LV111.'
The first pages in the book are Remarks on the Fairy Queen by Mr Hughes.
The next is 'a letter of the Author explaining his defign of the Peom
of the Fairy Queen' dated 23 June 1589
The next states it is an advertisment, in the first
paragraph says 'it is hoped the reader will find this edition more
correct than any of the former.'"
This inquirer would like to sell the book, and doesn't know what it's
worth. I've suggested that she go to a good dealer and get an
appraisal, but in the meantime I promised her I would issue a general
notice to you all. If any of you might be interested in finding out
more, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the owner.
Thanks,
Terry
