A 5 day course at the University of Oxford Department for Continuing
Education between 2/10/02-17/10/02
There is increasing recognition that the use of evidence to improve health
care is influenced by a wide range of social factors. The quality of the
communication between clinician and patient, and the patient’s
understanding of treatment options, can influence the choice of treatment.
Professionals’ ability to use good quality evidence from randomised
controlled trials and the patient’s ability to comply are influenced by a
number of factors in daily life. Health managers’ decisions can also be
influenced not only by research evidence but also by social, political and
economic factors. The Qualitative Research Methods module explores the ways
in which research projects can be designed to explore these issues. The
module is structured to help students to design and carry out a qualitative
project. Students must identify a work-based issue that can be investigated
using a qualitative approach. Students conduct fieldwork to collect data,
and practical assistance is given with data analysis and writing up. Small
group sessions are used to critically appraise the quality of qualitative
research.
AIMS OF THE COURSE
1) To provide an overview of the methods that are used in qualitative
health research
