medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. June) is the feast day of:
John and Paul (d. 363?) These two martyrs are mentioned in the canon of
the Roman mass, but their particulars have been lost. J & P's existing
passio is an adaptation of the story of two other saints---army officers
who were martyred at Antioch under Julian the Apostate. Legend says that J
& P were put to death in a private house---perhaps the 3rd-4th cent. house
found under the church of SS John and Paul in Rome.
Vigilius (d. 405) Vigilius was bishop of Trent, a very active missionary
among his still largely pagan flock. He won many over to Christianity, but
not all---a group stoned Vigilius to death in 405.
Maxentius (d. c. 600) Maxentius was born in Agde (France) in the mid-fifth
century. At a young age he was given to Abbot Severus of Saint-Andre to be
educated; Maxentius later became a monk. He went to Poitou where he and
the priest Agapitus founded the moanstery later named Saint-Maixent.
Maxentius ruled as abbot, but had a hermitage built near the monastery
where he could retreat.
Peregrinus of Amiterno (d. early 7th cent.) Peregrinus was bishop of
Amiterno. He was martyred by Arian Lombards by being thrown into a
river---his body was brought to shore at Zara, where it was preserved and
honored.
Anthelm (d. 1178) Anthelm was born near Chambery (France) in 1107. When
he was thirty years old, he gave up his benefice and became a Carthusian
monk. Only two years later, in 1139, he became prior of the mother house
of the order, which flourished with him in charge. After 24 years, though,
Anthelm was made bishop of Belley, where he was a stout defender of
episcopal rights.
