While doing some research on New York's tanneries I came across a letter
written in 1921 by a retired Catskills tanner who was raised in Sullivan
County:
"We lived in Stone Ridge and in Kingston. One year I think in the Hasbrouk
house on the road to Rondout, and also next door to the Ulster County Bank.
I cannot place them in regular order as to the dates. I remember when at the
Ridge, that I used to go down to the Falls and stay at Uncle Jake's when
Roebling was building the Aqueduct and bring home wire and things Roebling
gave me. I would go down with him to the Aqueduct and return when he came to
dinner."
It's too bad the author didn't explain more about what he was doing at the
Neversink Aqueduct with Roebling other than picking up souvenirs.
