Dear Archivists, Librarians and Historians,
I would like to invite your contributions to an
exciting project: the
creation of a labor history map of California. This
map, which will be
printed in an attractive large format and broadly
disseminated to
libraries, schools and unions, will illustrate and
document
geographically and historically diverse events in
California's turbulent
labor history.
We hope to gather stories from archives and libraries
within California
- as well as from amateur historians and working
people - so that we can
create a map and timeline which will be as complete
and representative
as possible. The stories will include labor
activities and events in
workers' communities, such as strikes, boycotts,
organizing drives, and
cultural activities. Some of these events will be
included on the map,
and the others will be included on a larger timeline
and website.
We have set up a web page for the initial,
information-gathering phase
of
the project, at
http://www.library.ca.gov/CRB/labormap/submission.html.
It includes a
pdf
of a "site submission form" which you can insert in
your newsletters or
post on bulletin boards. The web page also has an
online form which
you, your patrons, colleagues or constituents can use
to send us
information online.
The sponsor of the California Labor History Map
project is the Speaker's
Commission on Labor Education, with the assistance of
the California
State Library and the California State University.
The project, as we
envision it, is partly inspired by "The History of
Labor in New York
State," a poster-sized map that was produced by the
New York Labor
History Association and finished in 1998.
We hope to have completed The California Labor History
Map by June,
2003. If you would like a copy, please let us know.
Thank you very much.
