Call for Participation in One-Day Workshop:
Design and Evaluation of HCI Educational Resource
Tuesday 3rd September 2002, South Bank University, London
Organisers:
John Rosbottom & Jonathan Crellin, University of Portsmouth
( [log in to unmask], [log in to unmask] )
Alistair Kilgour, The Open University ( [log in to unmask] )
Jo Hyde, University of Bath ( [log in to unmask] )
You are invited to participate in an intensive, interactive, participatory
workshop focusing on the design and evaluation of HCI educational
resources, taking place as part of the HCI 2002 International Conference
(www.hci2002.org). The overall rationale of the workshop is to investigate
the value of modern approaches to teaching and learning, particularly in
the context of HCI education. We aim in particular to see how much mileage
there may be in pursuit the loose but intriguing analogy between the
development of HCI learning and professional practice as a social,
participative, process, and the user-centred design methodologies which
form a core part of the subject matter of most HCI courses.
Participants who can contribute from their own experience of innovative
design, evaluation or appraisal of educational techniques or resources for
HCI (as course leaders, tutors, examiners, or learners) are particularly
encouraged to apply. Participation will be limited to 16 (plus the
organisers), with selection based on submitted position papers. The
workshop will relate in particular to these underlying themes:
· the relation between what we teach in HCI about user-centred and
participatory design of interfaces, and how we design courses, teaching
methods and supporting resources
· how we measure quality in our teaching, and evaluate educational
effectiveness.
We are particularly keen to attract participants with knowledge or
experience in:
· evaluation and measurement of the educational effectiveness of
novel educational methods or techniques, in HCI or other areas;
· adaptive or participative design of training or educational
material on HCI
· research on factors affecting the effectiveness of learning in
higher education, including on-campus learning, distance learning, and
web-based delivery of resources and support.
· being a recent HCI learner, especially on a course using innovative
techniques, individually tailored content or resources, or participative
design of learning materials
· delivering professional development courses on HCI or usability to
those new to HCI in industry or commerce.
If you are interested in being part of the workshop, please submit a
position paper not more than two A4 pages in length, giving details of your
own recent work, ideas, and experience relevant to the areas listed above,
as well as where you think future research should be focused in order to
achieve effective quality assurance, comparative evaluation, and informed
iterative design in HCI education. Position papers should be sent not later
than 30th June to John Rosbottom, University of Portsmouth Department of
Information Systems ( [log in to unmask] ). Applicants will be
informed of the outcome by 14th July at the latest (but should not delay
registering for the conference until then).
Proposed Structure
The workshop is scheduled as a full-day event on Tuesday 3rd September
2002, and the initial plan is to divide the day into 4 sessions:
Part 1 (plenary): each participant will briefly present their position paper,
and their goals for the workshop.
Part 2: (plenary): working together the participants will identify work items
to be the focus of subgroups for part 3.
Part 3: (subgroups of three or 4): subgroups will work separately on the work
items identified in part 2.
Part 4: (plenary): synthesis of the output from the subgroups into
workshop deliverables.
Planned Outcomes
The workshop will produce a review of current and proposed design and
evaluation practice in the development and use of HCI teaching materials
and resources, and a proposal for research in identified areas of design
and evaluation where useful and widely applicable results are achievable
with manageable effort.
