Workshop on Goal-Oriented Business Process Modeling (GBPM'02)
London, UK (September 2, or 3, 2002)
attached to HCI 2002 (http://www.hci2002.org)
During the past ten years, requirements on functionality of business
applications have been slowly changing. This change may be described as
moving from the traditional, "human-assisting" systems, to a new generation
of "human-assisted" systems.
A human-assisting system helps a human being only to perform certain
activities, e.g. to write a letter, to print an invoice, to complete a
transaction, etc. The relations between these activities, and the aim of
the whole process are beyond the understanding of the system, but are a
prerogative of the human participant. In a human-assisted system, the roles
are reversed, the system has a complete picture of the process and is
involved in all activities. Only when the system cannot perform some
activity on its own, it will ask the human participant for assistance.
Human-assisted systems require another type of user-interface than
traditional function-oriented business software. However, a possibility of
building such a system depends very much on whether we can understand, and
model business processes that the system is supposed to support, which is
the topic of the GBPM'02 workshop.
Extended abstract:
---------------------------
This workshop is the third one in a series of international workshops on
business process modeling started at ECOOP'98, and continued at CAiSE*00.
The workshop is aimed at discussing issues connected to the goal-oriented
view on business processes. The most important topics suggested for
discussions: (a) representation of goals and movement to the goals (b)
goal-oriented business process patterns, (c) goal-oriented methods for
business process analysis and (re)engineering. The workshop does not focus
on any particular method or technology. All possible approaches (be it
object-oriented, agent-oriented, based on Petri nets, etc.) to exploitation
of goal-oriented view on business processes are very welcome.
The aim of the workshop is discussions, rather than presentations. A
position paper does not necessarily need to include the answers to the
problems of business process analysis, reengineering, or control. A
position paper that raises the relevant questions, describes successful or
unsuccessful practice, or experience will be welcome as well.
The results of discussions will be summarized in a working document that
will be produced after the workshop. A selection of the best papers will be
considered for publishing in a special issue of an international journal.
The intended audience is researchers and practitioners from the fields of
business development, and business application software development.
