Knowing of the interraction between RK and Bret Harte
over the years, I have been reading some of Harte's
work (very enjoyable).
I have come across one thing that may interest those
members who are unaware of it - a set of three
parodies by Harte of RK's work.
They are collected in a work "New Burlesques" (which
can be found at Project Gutenberg
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/etext00/nbrlq10.txt)
as "Stories Three" by R-DY-RD K-PL-NG with the titles:
'I. For Simla Reasons'
'II. A Private's Honor'
'III. Jungle Folk'
There is only one reference in the Journal Index of
Jan 1929 in News and Notes "Parody. Bret Harte's
Parodies Sought", and I have not found any reference
to it in any of the RK biographies that I have.
Does anyone know whether RK saw these parodies and
what his reactions were? I hasten to say that this is
just for personal curiosity and not a piece of serious
research.
