Otto Weininger’s Sex and Character: A Centenary Re-evaluation
University of Sussex
27–29 June 2003
On the occasion of the centenary of Otto Weininger’s Sex and Character,
and marking the publication of the first full English translation of the work, an
international and interdisciplinary conference will take place at the University
of Sussex, organised by the English and Modern Languages subject groups.
The translation (by Ladislaus Löb) will be published by Indiana University
Press.
The aim of this conference is a re-evaluation of Weininger’s controversial
book and an assessment of its cultural and intellectual legacies. We
welcome contributions on all aspects of Weininger’s life and work, in
particular on the following themes and topics:
- Weininger and his circle
- The meanings of suicide
- Psychoanalysis and sexology
- Weininger’s philosophy and his criticism of science and psychology
- Anti-Semitism and "The Woman Question"
- Weininger and emancipation
- Weininger’s influence and reception
- Weininger, literature and art
- The relevance of Weininger today
The conference will be organised around plenary sessions and panels of
related papers of approximately 30 minutes length. If you would like to offer a
paper, please send an abstract of no more than one page to one of the
conference organisers listed below by 15 October 2002. We plan to publish
the proceedings as a book.
