My name is Michael Golec. I'm a PhD candidate in art history at Northwestern
University. My dissertation, "Pop Art's Positivism," examines the artistic
pedagogical model of the Bauhaus-Aufbau as a crucial component of Pop art's
complex historical lineage. Although scholars of art history have recognized
that the Bauhaus program has had an enormous impact on making and viewing Pop
art, what has been significantly overlooked is the fundamental contribution
of Logical Positivism to that pedagogy, and therefore, this philosophy's
influence on Pop art. As I will argue, positivism is a structural component
of Pop artworks; it is a vital aspect of their making, viewing, reception,
and criticism. In addition to my dissertation reserach, I have recently
published an article on Gyorgy Kepes in Design Issues (Spring 2002). I am
also co-editing, with the architecture historian Aron Vinegar, a special
issue of Visible Language (Spring 2003) that will reevaluate Venturi, Scott
Brown, and Izenour's Learning from Las Vegas.
I look forward to adding to the Design-History dialogue.
Best Regards,
