Video streaming: a new pedagogical approach
A one-day workshop from ALT

Date: 11 July 2002
Time: 1000 -1600
Venue: Manchester Metropolitan University
Cost: Stlg 80 (ALT members), stlg 130 (non-members)
Booking deadline: 27 June 2002

OVERVIEW
The use of streaming digital video is rapidly becoming a viable
option for higher education and in training. Via a web browser
‘streaming’ video clips can be linked to slides, text conferencing,
video conferencing and other applications. This seamless
integration offers an unprecedented opportunity to move away from
predominantly text-based information and communication
technologies (ICT) to establish the moving image as a focus for
student activity. Despite its long history, video and particularly its
new streaming incarnation still lacks an established ‘pedagogic
space’ within mainstream e-learning. The purpose of this workshop
is to explore collectively the pedagogic potential, strengths and
weaknesses of video streaming as a key component of e-learning.

Note this is not a technical ‘how to’ workshop. This is a discussion-
based workshop which will facilitate the sharing of ideas on the
pedagogy of streaming video.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED
The workshop will cover a range of themes including:

* the pedagogic uses of video and audio streaming
* the educational value of video
* video as a tool for student activity
* video integrated with other media
* case studies (participants' experiences)
* research issues (what we know and what we need to find out)

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Participants will be able to engage with the presenters’ research
and practical experiences around the pedagogic value and use of
video streaming. Participants will collectively share and discuss the
pedagogic potential of video steaming. The expected outcomes are:

* to increase the awareness and repertoire of video-centred learning
strategies
* to initiate a community of interest for further collaboration and
research

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The workshop will be particularly useful for teaching staff,
practitioners, researchers, and trainers with an interest in using
video streaming for mainstream e-learning.

PROGRAMME
1000 Registration and welcome

1020 Introduction to the workshop themes and presenters

1025 Chris O’Hagan
‘The Effectiveness of Video in Teaching and Learning: winding
backwards and forwards’

Chris O’Hagan will look at the research into and applications of film
and video in the last half-century, and the prospects for effective
pedagogical use in the future.

1050 Mireia Asensio and Clive Young
‘The new visual literacy: the pedagogic value of streaming video’

Mireia Asensio and Clive Young will be looking at video as a new
form of visual literacy that can be used creatively to capture, show
and share tacit, ad hoc and informal forms of knowledge as a focus
for observation, analysis and dialogue.

1115 Coffee Break

1130 Chris Steeples
‘Video for networked learning: promoting reflection through
stimulated recall’

Chris Steeples will report on an ESRC project studying the
potential uses of representations of practice, particularly in video
clips for professional learning in distributed collaborative online or
networked environments. The project critically examined the use of
video clips for encouraging practitioners to be reflective when
articulating about their practices.

1155 Sally Spinks
'Using an appropriate medium for training the media - how the BBC
is utilising video to deliver learning'

Sally Spinks will talk about the early ventures with e-learning in the
BBC, and how they have now introduced more video content. This
usually has a double use – i.e. the content of the video itself and
the production values of video that can be used for learning
purposes.

1220 Mike O’Donoghue
'Collecting and using video to support online discussion'

Mike O’Donoghue will examine the creation and theoretical design
considerations of a number of online video clips and their
effectiveness in stimulating online discussion. Examples will be
taken mainly from EU project and current ESRC research work.

1245- 1.30 Buffet lunch

1330 Group activity: Delegates will be asked to collectively
brainstorm in groups and generate ideas around the workshop
themes including: pedagogic arguments for using video, ideas for
integration of video into VLE, top tips for video use and challenging
research issues.

This will be a one-hour session with an opportunity to feedback on
the discussions after the break

1445 Coffee break

1500 Facilitators for each theme will give a short report back to the
whole audience.

1530 What next? Networking and closure

16.00 Close
