Invitation from Frances Sheldon, Head of Department
Department of Social Work Studies
University of Southampton, Southampton SO17 7BY
Dear Colleague
Re: University of Southampton Golden Jubilee
Celebrations
The University received its Royal Charter on 29 April
1952, only a few weeks into the reign of HM Queen
Elizabeth II. The Charter created the University of
Southampton and enabled it to award its own degrees.
Since that time around 100,000 students have
graduated from the University, and it has developed into
a leading research university, with an international
reputation.
The Golden Jubilee Weekend runs from 5-7 July 2002
and as part of these celebrations the Department of
Social Work Studies will be hosting a Public Lecture on
Saturday 6 July at 2pm in the Murray Lecture Theatre,
Murray Building, Salisbury Road, Southampton.
Professor Lena Dominelli, Professor of Social and
Community Development in the Department of Social
Work Studies and Director of the Centre for International
Social and Community Development will give a lecture
entitled Ties that Bind: Communities in Social Work.
I do hope that your and some of your colleagues will be
able to attend this lecture and also join in the other
celebrations taking place that weekend. For more
information please go to the Golden Jubilee website at
http://www.goldenjubilee.soton.ac.uk
Please contact Glenda Stevens, Departmental Co-
ordinator to confirm whether or not you will be attending
