Post-doctoral Fellowship:‘The Theory and Politics of Civil Society’
ACADEMIC-RELATED RESEARCH STAFF – GRADE 1B:
Salary: £17,626 - £22,522 p.a. (pensionable)
Professors John Gardner (Law) and Jane Lewis (Social Policy) intend to
appoint a post-doctoral fellow for a period of one year (non-renewable) from
1 September 2002.
The fellowship is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, in connection
with a Sawyer Seminar series to be held in Oxford during the academic year
2002-3. The fellow will be expected to pursue advanced research in an area
related to the theme of the seminar series - ‘The Theory and Politics of
Civil Society’- and also to play the leading role in organising the
seminars. The successful candidate will have a strong academic record in
social policy, history, philosophy, politics, economics, law, or a related
discipline. Some administrative experience would be an advantage.
The fellow will have an office at the Rothermere American Institute near the
Law and Social Sciences buildings, and should be prepared to work with
colleagues from a variety of disciplines. The seminar series will cover the
following themes: ‘ideas and ideals of civil society’ (focusing on more
philosophical issues); ‘the story of civil society’ (focusing on historical
and social science explanations); and ‘civil society today and tomorrow’
(focusing on current debates and developments). A copy of the seminar

Research Studentships:‘The Theory and Politics of Civil Society’
Professors John Gardner (Law) and Jane Lewis (Social Policy) intend to award
two non-renewable one-year research studentships for the academic year
2002-3. The value of each studentship will be £7000
The studentships are funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, in
connection with a Sawyer Seminar series to be held in Oxford during the
academic year 2002-3. The students will be expected to be working on topics
connected to the theme of the seminar series, ‘The Theory and Politics of
Civil Society’.
The studentships are open to new and existing Oxford research students in
any relevant discipline, including (but not restricted to) social policy,
history, philosophy, politics, economics, and law. In the case of one
research studentship preference may be given to a social scientist who has
completed his or her first year of research training in a recognised ESRC
outlet. In the case of the other research studentship preference may be
given to a student in the humanities.
Applicants with an interest in the following broad areas are particularly
welcome:
- the comparative development of civil society
- the relationship between non-profit organisations and the state in respect
of ‘welfare’
- the law and/or ethics of charity, volunteering, or mutual self-help
- the philosophy of trust
- public standards of accountability (e.g. judicial review) applied to
non-state bodies
