Hello Sophie,
have you tried heavy eccentric loading for your Achilles problem?
Alfredsons research (1998) shows that following a 12 week prog, tendon pain
went and calf strength equalled non injured side. all were recreational
athletes with tendinosis with degenerative changes and long standing pain.
the control group were equal in diagnosis and duration but not one of the 15
improved and all went on to have surgery. their conventional treatment was
just that - NSAIDS, rest, changes of shoes, orthosis, physiotherapy and
ordinary training programmes
i've used it many times and it has worked with everyone so far
Cheers,
Anna.

Subject: achilles tendon decompression
Can anyone give me the benefit of their experiences in treating post-op TA
decompression?
I'm contemplating having my own done after 20 years' abuse. I am now at the
stage of being kept awake 1 - 2 hours most nights with pain and the tendons
are nurdled and horrible: can't bear to let anyone even palpate them
lightly. I am getting increasingly frequent nasty jabby pains in them even
when at rest, as well as the more usual almost constant ache and tightness.
MRI shows myxoid degeneration of the tendons themselves and fusiform
swellings just above the calcanei.
I have tried conservative treatment - failed but ghastly! Have tried
complete rest for 6 months +. The pain subsided but returned even with a
gradual return to activity. I've also tried orthotics prescribed /
constructed by two different podiatrists.
I have a good surgeon who is prepared to operate. He reckons on 60 - 70%
chance of improvement, says he's never made anyone worse. He proposes POP
three weeks then "moon boots" for three weeks; three months off running and
four months + off tennis post-op.
Does anyone have experience of short and longterm effects of this op?
Thanks
Sophie
