medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (17. May) is the feast day of:
Restituta (d. c. 304 or c. 250) According to her passio, Restituta was
martyred in North Africa. A vita written in the 10th century gives further
details: that she was sent out to see in a burning ship, which then landed
with her corpse on the island of Ischia near Naples. A cult of Restituta
developed at an early age in Campania, Corsica, and Sardinia.
Madron (Maden) (?) Madron, according to legend, was a hermit from Cornwall
who lived either in his homeland or in Brittany. Numerous churches in
Cornwall are still dedicated to him, and the city of Madron is named after
the saint, apparently having developed around his hermitage. There is
still a pilgrimage to the shrine of Madron.
Maildulf (d. 673) The Irish monk Maildulf founded the monastery of
Malmesbury in England in the mid-seventh century. His companion Aldhelm
became first abbot.
Walter of Mondsee (d. 1158) Walter was a Benedictine monk. He became
abbot of Mondsee in Austria, and was already honored as a saint in his
lifetime.
