EVENTS AND PLACE MAKING
Event Research Conference
Sydney, 15 - 16 July 2000
Presented by
Australian Centre for Event Management
in association with
CRC in Sustainable Tourism
University of Technology Sydney and Victoria University
CONFERENCE THEME
The 2002 event research conference will adopt the theme "Events and Place Making".
It will examine the role of events in building destinations, and in creating a sense of place and community.
Events can be a vital ally in this process by bringing people, life and colour to public spaces, and by establishing new models for their use and promotion. Events can also help to position towns, cities, regions, even countries, in the minds of would-be visitors, and by so doing aid in the tourist destination branding process. But these and other benefits do not accrue automatically from the staging of events. They are created and maximised by event enhancement strategies that are cleverly devised and carefully implemented.
This conference seeks to explore in the broadest sense the role of events in creating a sense of place, both from the viewpoint of visitors to an area and locals, and the benefits that flow from successful strategies and management practices that seek to achieve this goal.
CONFERENCE PROGRAM
The conference program will include a series of plenary sessions, forums and panel sessions designed to explore the many aspects of the conference theme, and to encourage lively discussion and debate. Keynote speakers include:
PETER KENYON
Peter Kenyon is a social entrepreneur and community enthusiast. Over the last decade he has worked with over 600 communities throughout Australia and overseas seeking fresh and creative ways to inspire innovative approaches to community and economic renewal. He is motivated by the desire to create healthy, vibrant and resilient communities.
His experience convinced Peter that one cannot develop communities from the top down or from the outside in. Communities need to build from the inside out, and for their residents to invest themselves, ideas, assets and resources in the process. Subsequently, he created the Bank of I.D.E.A.S. (Initiatives for the Development of Enterprising Action and Strategies) to promote such a paradigm shift and assist with the necessary facilitation, ideas and skills.
Peter will share with conference participants his experience in working with communities in over 30 countries, and his observations of how events can be used as drivers of community renewal and place making.
SUE CLARK
Sue Clark has extensive experience in the Arts and Cultural Industry with over thirty years working experience in the educational, government and private sectors. Her diverse experience in the arts includes teaching, lecturing, curriculum, policy and program development in the fields of art and design, cultural planning, community art, public art and indigenous arts. She has had ten years business experience within her own company Torque P/L including project management, arts and masterplans for urban design and cultural tourism precinct developments.
Sue is currently a Research Fellow with the Victorian College of the Arts, and is Mirvac's Arts Consultant for the Yarra's Edge development within Melbourne's Dockland site. Her current projects include a City of Port Phillip Urban Iconography Study to identify and record the municipality's distinctive neighbourhood icons, and to formalise planning policies and guidelines that will protect and promote their place identity significance and value. Sue is also working on an Urban Art Strategy for the City of Port Phillip, which refocuses on policy and strategic project opportunities within the city and details design guidelines and commissioning processes for 'best practice' urban art within a place identity/ place management framework. For the conference, Sue will discuss community identifiers of place, and the implications that these have for events.
JOHN AITKEN
John Aitken is a proven leader in strategic innovative event management. Since 1980, his event company John Aitken Productions has worked closely with communities, government, media and major corporations throughout Australia to produce more than 1200 highly successful events. John's unique portfolio of major festivals, celebrations, historic anniversaries, corporate and community events have involved more than 20 million people.
