Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself as I have just joined the list. My name is Sarah Supple and I am in the 2nd year of my doctorate in psychotherapeutic and counselling psychology. I am faced with the daunting task of beginning to write up my 2nd year research and wondered if any of you were interested in similar issues. It is a qualitative piece, using the voice relational method (based on the work of Carol Gilligan). It is entitled "Voicing the Identities of People with Physical Disabilities". This research will consider the concept of identity in relation to the issue of disability. This will explore self-concept amongst people with a diversity of physical states in order to investigate how they percieve their physical impairment and whether their sense of self includes their physical impairment. If a person's disability is found to be integral to their identity it will be considered how salient a feature it is and if they feel they have a disabled cultural identity.
I was wondering if anyone has done similar work, or is interested in the area. I think a particular issue for me at the moment is defining what voice is.
From Sarah.
