Anyone out there fully familiar with the use of impairment-related /
disability related terminology as negative metaphors..... in literature,
in everyday speech, etc. who might be interested in being one of 2 or 3
guests on a radio program that will discuss it for between a half hour
and an hour?
The AB host may or may not have some "gotcha" notion up his sleeve, so
you really have to know your stuff (like if he wants to demand
linguistic / historic proof of why "invalid" isn't OK).... and like in
all situations where you may be explaining a little understood POV to a
media person who really wants to hide a debate ("aren't you people going
too far?") in every question.... you have to know how to strongly
maintain the focus on where you want to keep it. Discuss things like
frequent public use of "blind", "deaf", "alzenheimers", "retarded", etc.
as pejorative metaphors.... when other words would be more accurate and
less offensive. I want to stay away from cliche "battle of the PC..."
format and frame these word-choice options also in terms of caring about
expressing oneself as well as possible.
Live show probably in New York City, late Friday or early Sunday. A
non-profit station. Building's back-door no-step accessible, toilet and
studios are accessible.
I haven't had 2-way discussion with them yet, to find out more. Invite
is starting out as for one person, but I'm going to refuse tro do it
alone and advocate for 2 or 3 (4?) depending on what group I can put
together. If it seems from talking with them that it's a simple hatchet
job they want to do, of course I'll decline.
Of course it would be nice of the group of 2, 3 or 4 could be mixed /
balanced various ways.
