Dear all,

I would like to consider the relationship between the
"canonical" documentation of DCMI metadata terms maintained by
the Usage Board and the various schema representations of the
same.  In particular, I would like to take a close look at the
documentation I have been working on (described below, see a
recent version at
http://www.gmd.de/People/Thomas.Baker/usage/terms/dc/) and the
RDF schema that Roland is working on at
http://www.mathematik.uni-osnabrueck.de/projects/dcqual/qual21.3.1/Schema/dctermsA.

Specifically, I'm wondering whether there are significant
differences in the scope or content of the information the two
representations convey.  If yes, need that be the case?  Over
the long run it would be madness to try keeping two separate
representations in synch.  If no, then could one (eg, the RDF
schema) perhaps be generated from the other (eg, the flat text
documentation) -- or vice versa?

I have been revamping the documentation of metadata term
semantics and related decisions with the assumption that we are
moving away from maintaining these things in the form of
periodically reissued "Recommendation" documents (versioned as
documents) towards maintaining them in a Vocabulary Management
System database (VMS).  My prototype is mirrored under
http://www.gmd.de/People/Thomas.Baker/usage/ (note that the
_displayed_ URLs start with http://dublincore.org while the
_HREF_ URLs point to other prototype pages at www.gmd.de, so
that clicking on them will call up other documents at www.gmd.de

    This is a complete listing of every version, past and
    present, of every Element, Element Refinement, and
    Encoding Scheme.  For example, the Language element has
    four versions: 1.0 of 1998, 1.1 of 1999, revised wording
    approved in 2001, addition of status and namespace URI
    in 2002.  I have attached the entire file below.

    Each such change of version corresponds to a "Decision".  The
    "Decision:" link for that version points to an anchor on the
    page http://dublincore.org/usage/decisions/, which in turn
    points to all relevant supporting documentation for a
    particular decision.  In effect, then each time-stamped
    decision has unique identity.  (Note that some entries
    point to a yet-to-be-written "decision" document resulting
    from the Usage Board meeting in Bath two weeks ago.)

    "Term type" and "status" are also expressed in the form
    http://dublincore.org...  and currently resolve to
    anchors in the Mission and Process documents.  In
    effect, then, the term types (elements, element
    refinements, encoding schemes) and status levels
    (registered, recommended, conforming) also have unique
    identity.

    that some fields are filtered out (eg, VMS-ID:) or
    transformed (eg, Status) for readability.  The more general
    point is that how to _present_ the terms to various users --
    the selection criteria, sorting order, and level of
    administrative detail offered -- can be discussed separately
    from the issue of how the data themselves should be structured.
