A Colloquium will be held on 14th & 15th June 2002 entitled 'European
Responses to David Hume since 1739'. It will take place in the Court Room of
Senate House, University of London, Malet St WC1, and is being convened by
Prof. Peter Jones (our Hume volume editor) with the help of the Research
Project. It will look at the reception of Hume's ideas on the Continent of
Europe since the first publication of his work in 1739.
The Colloquium will enable contributors to the Project's volume on the
European Reception of Hume to present their findings. No complete edition of
Hume's works has yet been published, nor has his work been translated into
many other languages. One major key lies in the circulation of French
Journals throughout Europe, and among topics to be covered will be the
influence of Jesuit writings about Hume, the circulation of Hume's ideas by
means of continental philosophical criticism, especially after Kant, and the
extent to which Hume's History was selectively interpreted.
Speakers will be established Hume scholars from Britain, Western and Eastern
Europe and North America. A conference notice is attached for your interest.
