CASBAH WEB SITE UPDATES:
The CASBAH web site has recently been updated. The most recent Progress
Report (Progress Report 19: 1 March - 2 May 2002) at
http://www.casbah.ac.uk/progressreport19.htm is now available featuring
details about new collection descriptions recently added to the database.
These include: summaries of 6 photograph collections housed at the McKenzie
Heritage Picture Archive (Brixton, London) - with the first description
about MHPA providing an overview of the entire archive of photos from the
late 19th century to the present day, and other thematic collection
descriptions entitled 'Women in Greenwich', 'The Black Victorians', 'Imaging
the Black Family' 'The FUZZ - Afrikan Hairstyles and their influence' and
'My Mothers, My Sisters' - all compiled by the project's researcher, Roiyah
Saltus-Blackwood, in conjunction with MHPA's founder and director, Anita
McKenzie.
Progress Report 19 also contains a very detailed account of the project's
research outcomes (particularly during the last quarter of the project's
funding period), compiled by Roiyah, and available in a report entitled
'Project Researcher's Final Report ( 2 January - 2 May 2002)'.
A launch date for the database has now been confirmed - 29 May 2002. Details
about the event programme are given in the Progress Report. (NB: Any
recipients of this message, particularly those from the project's partner
institutions, the CASBAH Steering Group, or the CASBAH-RSLP listserv are
welcome to contact the project before the launch date to discuss pre-viewing

The database search screens that will be active from 29 May 2002 have been
created by web designer Rik Munday, and can be viewed (as an inactive page

conferences which may interest members of this list:

2.The CONGRESS AGAINST RACISM (BARBADOS) INC. is hosting a follow-up
conference to the U.N. World Conference Against Racism (2001) at the
Sherbourne Conference Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, Barbados, 2-6
October 2002. The purpose of the 5-day conference will as follows: (a) To
scrutinize the inter-governmental Durban Declaration and Programme of Action
and to identify and prioritize those demands, measures and proposed projects
that are of critical importance to the nations, communities and people of
Africa and the African Diaspora; (b) Having recourse to the Durban N.G.O
Declaration And Programme of Action, to work out and agree upon detailed
strategies that are designed to achieve the implementation of such demands,
measures and proposed projects; and (c) To establish and launch a permanent
global Pan-African N.G.O. organization, the mandate of which will be to
pursue and operationalise the agreed upon implementation strategies.
Presentations at the conference will be structured around the following ten
themes: (1) Reparations for the Nations, Communities and People of Africa
and the African Diaspora; (2) A Response to Globalization and its Negative
Impact on Africa and the African Diaspora; (3) National and International
Affirmative Action and Special Economic Developmental Programmes for the
Nations, Communities And People of Africa and the African Diaspora; (4) A
Response to the Public Health Crisis Facing Africa and the African Diaspora;
(5) Reform Of Judicial, Penal And Police Systems and the Provision of Legal
Remedies for African and African Descendant Victims of Racism; (6) The Role
of Religion, Culture and Spirituality in Memorializing the African Maafa and
Telling the African Story to the World (7) The Application of Gender-based
Perspectives, Mechanisms and Measures to the Issues Facing Africans and
People of African Descent; (8) Critical Youth Programmes and Initiatives for
Africans and People of African Descent; (9) Education Initiatives and
Programmes Designed to Combat Anti-African Discrimination and to Promote
Justice And Development for Africans and African Descendants; (10) The
Development of National and International Oversight and Enforcement

As this is my last project-related update before I complete my contract here
on the 17th May, I would like to thank members of the project's partner
institutions, the CASBAH Steering Group, the CASBAH-RSLP listserv, the
Society for Caribbean Studies, the Black and Asian Studies Association and
all the project's external contacts for their help and advice since CASBAH
began in January 2000.
