Eindhoven University of Technology is looking for candidates for the
position of
POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER
(V.39 313)
Heuristics for the design and evaluation of children's technologies
at the Department of Technology Management, Capacity Group User Centred
Engineering
Project Description
The project aims to develop design heuristics for evaluating children's
technologies. It will follow a similar approach that was used to develop
Nielsen's heuristic evaluation method (Nielsen, 1994). Initially, existing
heuristics and guidelines from relevant areas (e.g. heuristics for
developing pleasurable interfaces, computer games, guidelines based on
child development, or marketing theories) will be collected. Subsequently,
this set of heuristics will be used to determine how well they explain
usability problems that were previously found using emperical evaluation
methods (e.g. collected in other projects related to this one). Then, a set
of these heuristics will be selected that provides the best possible
prediction of usability problems with children's technologies. The project
is related to two other PhD research projects on developing evaluation
criteria and developing usability testing methods for assessing children's
technology.
Tasks
The postdoc will be responsible for further operationalisation of the above
research and for co-ordinating with the related research projects in this
area, so that an integrated set of design methods can be developed.
Required
The candidate should have a strong backround in one or more of the
following areas: human-system interaction, computer science, industrial
design or developmental psychology. He/she should have obtained a PhD
degree and should have the ability to work independently. He/she is
internationally oriented and is able to co-operate in multidisciplinary
teams.
Appointment and salary
We offer a position for a period of 2 years. The gross salary will be
between =80 2.056,- and =80 3.260,- gross per month depending on background
knowledge and work experience (salary scale 10 of the Collective Employment
Agreement Dutch Universities).
In addition to this we offer a broad package of secundary benefits
(excellent sports facilities, a day-care centre, good working conditions
and an excellent technical infrastructure).
