The Fifth Asia-Pacific Conference on Computer-Human Interaction (APCHI 2002)
will be held at the Institute of Software (IOS), Beijing, China, one of the most
promising institutes in the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Beijing is the capital
of China and at the heart of Chinese culture.
APCHI 2002 follows on from previous APCHI conferences, held in Singapore, 1996
and 2000, Japan, 1998 and Sydney, Australia, 1997. The APCHI conference series
is sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing
Technical Committee on Human-Computer Interaction (IFIP TC13).
CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
APCHI'2002 is the fifth regional HCI conference for the Asia- Pacific region and
provides a unique opportunity in the Asia-Pacific region to keep abreast of the
latest development in this increasingly important subject. It aims to attract
researchers and practitioners from many countries and with a wide range of
interests, including human factors and ergonomics, human-computer interaction,
information systems, software engineering, artificial intelligence, design,
social sciences and management and associated disciplines.
APCHI 2002 will bring together HCI scholars, engineers and computer
practitioners in business and industry to present and discuss their latest work,
exchange and share their experiences, and explore new ideas and research results
on all aspects of Computer-Human Interaction. Important issues discussed in
this conference will have a long lasting impact on our information society of
the future.
Although APCHI 2002 is primarily concerned with the Asia-Pacific region,
participants from other regions of the world are also welcomed. An exhibition
will be included.
CONFERENCE TOPICS
Contributions that advance any area of HCI research and practice are invited.
Submissions may cover any topic indicated in the list below. Other topics are
also welcome:
u HCI method, practice, and theory
u Theory, model, and modeling in user, interface and domain
u Theory, method and implementation of usability practice
u User interface software architecture, tool and technology
u Method, model and tool for user-centered and organization-driven design
and development
u Case study of user interface design and development
u Innovative user interfaces, including pen, speech, gesture, multi-modal,
multimedia, virtual reality, augmented reality
u Human computer interactions and user interfaces in mobile, ubiquitous
and pervasive computing
u Perceptual user interfaces and adaptive user interfaces
u Implementations of cognitive psychology human-computer interface
u Human computer interactions and user interfaces for disability
SUBMISSION
u Submissions may be in the form of a full paper, a poster, technical
notes or a workshop.
u All submissions should report original work and must not have been
published previously.
u Submissions must be in the English language.
u Submissions will be reviewed by an international reviewer committee.
u The review process will retain the anonymity of authors and reviewers.
The acceptance criteria will include the accuracy and originality of ideas, the
clarity and significance of results, and the quality of the presentation.
Accepted full papers will be presented at the conference, and will be printed in
the Proceedings of the Conference by international famous publisher. Extended
versions of selected papers will be published in a special issue of Asian
Information, Science and Life( Nova Science Inc., NY) and Journal of Software
(Science Press, China). Other submissions will be presented in poster or
demonstration or short talk format. Proposals are encouraged for workshops in
areas of special interest.

LOCATION
APCHI 2002 will be held in Beijing. Beijing is the capital of People's Republic
of China, and it is China's political and cultural center.
Beijing is one of the historical and cultural cities and ancient capitals of the
world. As early as 700,000 years ago, Beijing has been one of the main inhabited
areas of the ancients. From 221 B.C when Emperor Qin Shihuang united China, to
937 A.D, Beijing was a place of strategic importance and capitals of the
northern kingdoms. On October 1, 1949, upon the founding of the People's
Republic of China, Beijing has become the center of culture, sciences,
technology and education. Across the city, there are 23 public libraries, 46
cultural centers, 126 museums and exhibition halls, 955 cinemas, and 42
professional art ensembles and troupes. There are 80 scientific research
institutes at the state and city level, with 8,479 senior and middle-rank
scientific research personnel. And now Beijing has 67 colleges and universities
with 175,000 students. There are 534 advanced schools for adults and technical
secondary schools with 226,000 students. Beijing is becoming one of the most!
attractive cities in the world.
Furthermore, Beijing has many places of interest, which include The Great Wall,
Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and Ming Tombs, Tiananmen
Square, Beihai Park, Ruins of Yuanmingyuan, Fragrant Hills (Xiang Shan). In a
word, Beijing will give you an unforgettable memory.
