MARIE CURIE TRAINING SITE - Fellowship Opportunities
ESRC Centre for Research in Development, Instruction and Training,
University of Nottingham, UK
'Principles for the design and evaluation of effective learning
environments'.
Staff at the Centre for Research in Development, Instruction and Training
(CREDIT) at the University of Nottingham welcome applications from eligible
doctoral students to apply for a Marie Curie Fellowship under the research
areas outlined below. The EU's Marie Curie programme is designed to
encourage the training and mobility of researchers throughout Europe.
Fellows would undertake part of their PhD studies (3-12 months) with an
internationally recognised team. The Centre is multi-disciplinary with
expertise from psychology, education, cognitive science, artificial
intelligence and human-computer interaction. The main focus of research is
the design and evaluation of effective learning environments and
technologies, based on investigations into the interactions between
teaching, learning and systems. Training will be provided in advanced
research methods (qualitative and quantitative). Applicants will need to
demonstrate how their proposal will address this theme.
Applicants are strongly advised to consult with their home supervisor before
making informal enquiries and application to the scheme. Fellows will
conduct a specified programme of work for the duration of the fellowship to
be previously agreed by their home and host supervisors.
Applications are particularly welcome from researchers in the
multi-disciplinary areas of developmental psychology, cognitive science,
artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction and related areas of
computer science and education. Prospective candidates should ideally have
completed their first year of doctoral studies. Expressions of interest are
welcome from potential candidates who are not yet in a position to submit a
formal application.
Host supervisors and topics are:
Dr Claire O'Malley [log in to unmask]
Development of peer tutoring and collaborative learning; Children and
Technology; Computer support for collaborative learning; Mixed reality
environments for learning.
Professor David Wood [log in to unmask]
Collaborative learning and instruction; Peer tutoring; Design and evaluation
of computer-mediated learning environments.
Dr Shaaron Ainsworth [log in to unmask]
Learning with multiple representations; Authoring environments; Design and
evaluation of computer based learning environments in mathematics and
science.
Dr Peter Cheng [log in to unmask]
Problem solving, reasoning and learning; Role of representational learning
systems in science, engineering and mathematics.
Dr Fernand Gobet [log in to unmask]
Acquisition of expertise; Computational models of the learning process.
Professor Peter Mitchell [log in to unmask]
Visuo-spatial abilities in autism; Theory of mind; Cognitive development;
Value of virtual learning environments for those with autism.
Please feel free to make informal contact with a potential host supervisor
to discuss the nature of the research prior to a formal application.
Otherwise, please contact the Training Site Co-ordinator, in the first
instance. Please use the subject header 'Marie Curie' in all email
correspondence. Dr O'Malley will then forward your enquiry to the most
appropriate supervisor. Applicants are asked to submit a Curriculum Vitae
(CV), proposal (500 words, also stating proposed duration of work) and
contact details of home supervisor. Suitable candidates will be taken to the
next stage of completing the formal application process.
An allowance of 1200 Euro per month of visit and a contribution towards
travel costs is made to each Fellow.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a good first degree from a recognised institution in
psychology or a related field such as computer science or education.
Applicants must be fluent in English, and eligible to apply according to the
EU criteria. Applicants should be under 35 years of age and a national of
one of the following countries (or have resided in an EU Member State for
the past five years, excluding the UK):

General Information
The Centre is based in the School of Psychology located at University Park,
Nottingham.
The University of Nottingham has an excellent research and teaching
reputation, and a strong community of international students. Fellows will
have access to training courses and the extensive facilities provided both
by the School and University. The Centre has its own video communication
lab, related facilities and equipment that may be used. Fellows will also
have access to the Mixed Reality Laboratory (MRL) based at the nearby
Jubilee Campus. Established in partnership by CREDIT and colleagues from
Computer Science and IT, and Manufacturing Engineering in 2000, the MRL has
an increasing international reputation for developing new technologies that
merge physical and digital worlds.
The university campus is considered one of the most attractive in the UK,
and Fellows will have access to its facilities (Libraries, Sports Hall etc)
and university owned accommodation. The city of Nottingham has a strong
youthful appeal with plenty of arts and cultural activities, and a vibrant
café/bar scene and nightlife.
