National Workshop for Economics Lecturers
Friday 24 May 2002, University of Bristol
Using games and simulations in teaching Economics
The Economics LTSN Centre is hosting a workshop on the use
of games and simulations in teaching Economics.
Whether you are new to the games or you have already used
them in your classes you will find it useful to take part
in this workshop. Games and simulations in the economics
classrooms have become an established tool. Their main
advantage is that students in class create a simulated
aspect of the economy through which they learn about the
power and depth of economic concepts.
The workshop will be highly participative in nature and
will offer various opportunities for the formal and
informal exchange of views and models of practice
The participants will have hands-on experience in various
economic games, both computerised and non-computerised.
The workshop will be facilitated by:
· Mark Sutcliffe, University of the West of England
· Andy Beharrell, Research and Development Officer,
Biz/ed
· John Sloman, Director of Economics LTSN, University
of Bristol
· Inna Pomorina, Research Officer, Economics LTSN,
University of Bristol
Mark has been using the Virtual Economy, a sophisticated
Web-based model of the UK economy, to teach and assess up
to 900 Year 1 students at the University of the West of
England. Andy has been responsible for developing a series
of Virtual Worlds, that include the Virtual Economy and
Virtual Developing Country.
