Apologies for cross-posting to these two learned lists! I am searching
for biblical commentaries (anything before 1559) that might have been
known or easily available to Richard Grafton and Richard Mulcaster,
chief architects of the royal entry of Elizabeth I known as "The Quene's
Maiestie's Passage" (1558, i.e. 1559). Grafton's role as a publisher of
Bibles is well known, and Mulcaster of course was educated at Eton,
Cambridge and Oxford. Their individual knowledge of the sources may
have differed, but considered together, it was undoubtedly excellent. In
the fifth pageant of the entry their treatment of the Biblical judge and
prophetess Deborah involved a good deal of extrapolation beyond the
Biblical source, and I am interested in tracking down the
possibilities. Any ideas? With thanks, Germaine.
