FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS
"Philosophy As. "
Friday 29th and Saturday 30th November 2002
Senate House, University of London
Philosophy Programme, School of Advanced Studies, University of London
Centre for Theoretical Studies, University of Essex
Confirmed plenary speakers: Simon Critchley (University of Essex), Manuel
DeLanda (Columbia University), Hilary Lawson.
Organisers: David Gamez, Havi Carel
This conference will bring together philosophers from a number of different
backgrounds to examine philosophy and set out a future for it. It will
present a positive vision of philosophy by contrasting different views and
opening them up to one another. It will be an exploration of the state,
strategies, interests and commitments of philosophy.
Through its selection of topics and speakers from different traditions this
conference will give a balanced view of philosophy that is not limited to
any one generation or field. It will be held over two days to allow speakers
from a wide range of backgrounds to be included. Group discussions will play
an important part in generating dialogue.
The conference will present its own vision of philosophy through the
self-reflexive matching between style and contents of the papers presented.
For example, a paper on philosophy as tradition might use extensive
citations from the tradition to make its point. In addition, it is hoped
that papers will be clear without sacrificing complexity, and focus on
issues not authors (unless this is justified by the subject matter).
A selection of papers from this conference will form the basis for a book
which will explore the issues it raises. This will not be a conference
proceedings but papers worked into chapters of a book. A website supporting
the conference will be launched soon.
Submissions for this conference are encouraged from all areas of philosophy.
Papers should be no more than 25 minutes long (4,000-5,000 words) and they
will be followed by a discussion.
The closing date for submissions is Friday 6th September 2002.
