italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Recently there was a book published by Dario Biocca, "The Mystery of Ignazio
Silone" and a review of it in the New York Review of Books. You may want to
take a look at that.

I would be grateful for any comments on the following, which have been
troubling me for some time
* Manzoni - In an interview published in La Repubblica on 10th Feb
Salvatore Silvano Nigro, on being asked about Manzoni & his reputation
outside Italy, says 'la traduzione inglese è pessima....penso che per
tradurre Manzoni servirebbe uno scrittore e non un sia pur bravo
traduttore'. No mention is made as to who or whose he is referring to,
but if it's Archibald Colquhoun & his then it seems to be a rather harsh
& unfair judgement. I don't know about other readers of this particular
translation but I myself certainly enjoyed it, when the Italian was
still beyond my reach. At the same time it aroused an appetite for the
original (and not because of the poor quality of the translation - but
precisely the opposite).
* Ignazio Silone - I am interested in knowing where to look for
news on the current state of research into Silone's background and how
far the recent revelations have affected interpretation of his writings.
