Subject: New HBSMR Training Courses
Dear all
A reminder that we have created a new range of HBSMR database and
GIS courses for 2002, running on dates in June and October. The new courses
have been designed for the different archaeological roles (e.g. DC casework,
data management etc.) for which the HBSMR software is now used. We need your
support to run and develop these courses - for full details see URL below.
The HBSMR package has been continually developing since it was first
launched, and HBSMR users and administrators need ongoing training to use
the system to best advantage. This is particularly relevant for the GIS
functionality. We are trying to provide this, and to link a progression of
courses into CPD - see our aims below.
The range of standard one-day courses is now as follows:
- HBSMR Operator June 17th, October 7th
- HBSMR Advanced Data Management June 18th, October 8th
- HBSMR Advanced Data Retrieval and Analysis June 19th, October
9th
- HBSMR System Administrator June 25th, October 14th
- Customizing HBSMR June 27th
- ArcView 3.x GIS for HBSMR June 28th
- MapInfo GIS for HBSMR June 26th, October 15th
(plus additional customized courses if required)
We have had a positive reaction to the new courses, but we need good
attendance to ensure that they run. We need at least two people booked onto
each course for it to run, and if they do not run in June and October these
new courses may have to be dropped.
Our general aims for the new courses are as follows:
- to provide appropriate training to new HBSMR operators and
administrators to get them started quickly
- to provide a range of focussed courses for existing users to
continually raise skill levels
- to provide a progression of certificated training levels for
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- to give a schedule of courses well in advance to allow SMR
managers to plan their training programmes and budgets
- to continue to provide flexible training/consultancy for specific
purposes if required
- to seek endorsement of all of our courses by the Archaeology
Training Forum in the near future
- to ensure that courses are affordable (prices have been kept at
2001 levels)
- to seek feedback about our courses so we can continue to develop
them in line with user requirements
Full details of courses with schedules and prices can be found on
our web site, under Downloads - HBSMR.

Please pass on this information as appropriate.
We hope HBSMR users and managers will take this opportunity to
review their training requirements against the new courses we are offering.
These new courses will only succeed and develop if they are well attended,
so we look forward to hearing from you!
Please call if you have any questions about the new courses.
Best wishes
Sarah, Tony and Crispin
