Dear Colleagues
Some of you may be interested in the following report, on mental health care services in the US published last May by Community Voices, a initiative funded by the W K Kellogg Foundation to improve the health of those with little access to healthcare. Authored byMargerite Ro from Columbia University and Lucy Shum from the University of Maryland, I attach below some brief info on the report. It can be downloaded from

Mental health care needs in the United States are largely unmet, according to a report released by Community Voices: HealthCare for the Underserved, an initiative of the W.K Kellogg Foundation. The report found that while 28 percent of U.S. adults experience a mental health or substance abuse disorder in any given year, only one-third of those with a mental disorder and less than half of those with a substance abuse problem will receive treatment. Barriers to treatment include a lack of insurance coverage, the cost of pharmaceuticals, stigma, a lack of providers in rural areas and, among ethnic minorities, linguistic and cultural obstacles, said the report. Among the report's recommendations is increasing mental health services targeted to children and adolescents, with a focus on schools as a primary care setting.
Best wishes
