Film Programme:
Sisters (Russian Federation, 2001)
Dir.Sergei Bodrov Jr, 2001, 85mins,
Ken Loach meets Guy Ritchie in Russia! The HealthProm/ Portobello Film
Festival feature film is the exciting directing debut by Sergei Bodrov Jr.
(the lead in Russian box office smashes Brother and Brother 2). Two half
sisters (Dina, 8 and Sveta, 13) come together when Dina is threatened with
kidnapping and only Sveta, a regular at the local rifle club, is able to
help.
The film- being screened for only the third time in the UK - offers a
narrative that appeals to any discerning filmgoer and insight into the
remarkable resilience of relationships. Drawing heavily on the formative
tunes of (the late) Viktor Tsoi, the soundtrack adds further texture to this
compelling portrayal of growing up in contemporary Russia.
Prisoner of the Mountains (Russian Federation, 1997)
This award-winning masterpiece is set in Chechnya and is loosely based on
Tolstoy's 'Prisoner of the Caucasus'. With outstanding performances from
Sergei Bodrov Jr. and Oleg Menshikov (of 'Barber of Siberia' and 'East-West'
fame), the film is both compassionate and honest in its portrayal of the
local villagers and the prisoner soldiers whose fate is intertwined with
theirs.
Temptations (Hungary, 2001)
Praised at the Berlin Film Festival and winner of three awards in native
Hungary, director Zoltan Kamondi, used non-professional actors in his
low-budget, exploration of the daily interaction of Roma and non-Roma
peoples. Marci, a talented university student interested in making a fast
buck, "buys" Juli, a 12-year-old gypsy girl, from her parents for three
crates of onions. Marci's failure to understand that under Romany law Juli
is now his wife, calls for drastic measures.
