Senior Faculty Position In The New Unit of Sociology and Related Disclipines
In conjunction with the move of the CEU Sociology Department from Warsaw
to Budapest, the University is searching for an experienced scholar to
play a leading role in the recruitment of new faculty and in curriculum
planning. In its new context, the expanded department should represent a
broad-based conception of social and cultural phenomena and should be
correspondingly pluralistic in the range of theoretical and methodological
training offered to its students.
The successful candidate will have an outstanding scholarly record in
Sociology and/or Social and Cultural Anthropology and will have thought
critically and reflexively about the current state of sociology, its
relations with other disciplines, and the implications of current processes
of social change for the future development of teaching and research in the
field.
While CEU is committed to training its students to play a constructive role
in teaching, research, and the development and implementation of policy in
their home countries, at the senior level it is especially concerned to
recruit scholars who can integrate the analysis of real problems into a
wider critical discussion of global processes of change and reactions to
changing forms and sources of hegemonic pressure.
CEU is an English speaking graduate research university located in Budapest;
Hungary. Its primary mission is to contribute to the development of open

countries, including all former communist countries. The teaching staff
consists of about 100 faculty from more than 30 countries.
The candidates should have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent. For the candidates
coming from the German academic world, the Habilitation is desirable.
The University would like to attract scholars who are willing to make a
long-term commitment to living and working in the region. Employees who are
not citizens or permanent residents of Hungary will be required to obtain a
work permit. The university will provide assistance with the work permit
formalities. The compensation package is subject to Hungarian taxation
regulations.
The initial contract is four years, and is renewable. The starting date is
no later than October 2002.
