Subject: SV: disabiility simulation exercises?
On simulation of the referred type:
"BUT, I have recently been thinking that there are some very
specific, practical lessons that a targeted excercise can deliver. For
instance, architects should have the oppportunity to experience what the
real turning radius of a wheelchair (or several different kinds of
wheelchairs) is/are, or slopes of ramps. Or the difference between
different
kinds of tactile stimuli."
What will people really learn?
What it is to ride a wheelchair for a non-disabled person?
I cannot imagine anything but that this simulation can have real
negative effects. For example, a person with full use of upper body,
good balance and full movement in hips etc (making leaning forward
possible) surely will know nothing about the effects of gradients of
slopes for a disabled person.
The only effect I've ever encountered after exercises like that is the
obligatory paternalistic pat on the head/shoulder and the question: "Why
can't you wheel yourself up that curb?" and subsequently the comment:
"maybe you need to exercise more".
Maybe it's my experience of Swedes being suedes. Maybe I do need more
exercise. :-)
BUT - until someone "proves" their beneficial good - or at least show
some credible evaluations that points in that direction - I will
continue to view them as unnecessary and no good.
Susanne
